Closure of the COVID Pass service

The NHS COVID Pass service will close on Monday 4 December and be unavailable to patients after this date.

There are no longer any domestic requirements to demonstrate vaccination status, and no countries require proof of COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of entry.

You may see an increase in the number of people asking about their COVID-19 vaccination information. Most patients can see this information in their GP health record in the NHS App, but please remind patients that the COVID Pass is no longer needed.

The NHS App continues to provide a simple and secure way for people to access a range of NHS services. Please use  the NHS App toolkit to help promote it to your patients.

You can contact our team if you have any questions.

Redesign of the NHS App

The NHS App has been redesigned to make it more intuitive and simpler for patients to find and access services.

Over the next few weeks, patients will be prompted to update their NHS App. They will see an updated home page, simpler structure, and easier-to-understand language within the NHS App.   We’re hoping to start the roll out before Christmas.

Some services have moved within the NHS App, but all the services patients need are still available.

Download the colleague pack to find out what's changing and how you can support patients.

SNOMED clinical terminology users: Share your views on proposed changes

Due to the extensive consultation taking place and the upcoming festive holidays the deadline for feedback has been extended from 15 December 2023 to 31 January 2024.

Do you use SNOMED CT role groupers in the substance or medicinal product hierarchies?

Role groupers are concepts which support the grouping of substance or medicinal product concepts by their intended use. SNOMED International is asking for seeking feedback on their proposal to inactivate these role groupers.

As the National Release Centre for SNOMED CT in the UK, we are collating feedback for the consultation.

Briefing papers for the consultation on the inactivation of Role Groupers in Substance and Medicinal Product Hierarchies can be found on Delen

Please provide your feedback to the 5 questions within the ‘Member/user requirements section’ (bottom of page 3 in the SNOMED International Briefing Note) to information.standards@nhs.net by 31 January 2024.

Update on Digital Medicines First of Type Scheme

We received more than 150 expressions of interest from NHS trusts for our Digital Medicines First of Type Scheme. We know that many technology suppliers contributed to these applications and we are grateful for your support.

We have shortlisted about 60 trusts and sent them a form asking for further information. We wanted to make you aware as we recognise that trusts are likely to reach out again for your support to complete this further request for information.

The form will ask for:

  • confirmation of the deliverables that can be realistically achieved by March 2024 – and clarity on the technical standards and/or specifications that will underpin the technical capability/functionality
  • confirmation of the funding required including an understanding of how this will be spent
  • information about the onwards value to the wider NHS, recognising that this is a first of type scheme focused on delivering technical capability/functionality that is intended to be available for use by other NHS organisations

This information will help us select the final set of applications to be supported by the funding available for this financial year (2023/24). Trusts will have until 12:30pm on 29 November to submit this form. We intend to confirm the successful applications by 5 December.

Our intention is that the successful applications represent a wide range of system supplier partners. This is to ensure we make the process as equitable as possible, to distribute the effort between now and the end of March 2024, and to ensure the greatest impact for the wider NHS.

If you have any questions, please contact us at digitalmedicines@nhs.net.

90% of NHS trusts now have electronic patient records

The NHS has met the government’s target for 90% of trusts adopting electronic patient records in hospitals ahead of schedule.

A total of 189 NHS trusts have now introduced new systems, with Hillingdon Hospitals and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS trusts becoming the latest to go live.

The government set the target of December 2023 in the Plan for digital health and social care, published last year.

NHS England is investing £1.9 billion to support hospital trusts to either adopt a new or improve their existing systems to ensure every hospital in England can benefit from digital transformation.

Last year NHS England spent over £400 million to support 150 NHS trusts, and a further £500 million will reach trusts this year.

Speaking at the NHS Providers National Conference and Exhibition in Liverpool on Wednesday, NHS England’s Chief Executive Amanda Pritchard said:

“Thanks to the teams at Sheffield Health and Social Care and Hillingdon Hospitals, who completed their go-lives over the last couple of weeks, you have now delivered on the target for 90% of trusts to have this capability in place ahead of winter.

“Delivering that switch isn’t easy but it’s worth it because that’s the underpinning work that will enable us to benefit from new technologies.”

Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins said:

“Electronic records give clinicians access to vital patient information when and where they need it, alerting them to immediate risks and giving them more time to care for their patients.

“I am pleased NHS England has met this important target ahead of schedule and look forward to working with the health service to ensure all NHS staff have the resources they need to deliver the modern healthcare our patients deserve.”

Electronic patient records (EPR) systems enable organisations to drastically change the way they operate and are the foundation for the use of more advanced technology systems for patient care.

They boost productivity and experience for staff as well as improving the flow of information between services, making it easier to provide care. The most digitised trusts have also been shown to operate with approximately 10% improved efficiency compared with less digitally mature providers.

EPR systems in hospitals combine patient notes, lab results, observations and digital prescribing. Alert features can also help clinicians quickly identify those at risk from conditions such as sepsis.

Dr Vin Diwakar, Interim National Director of Transformation at NHS England, said:

“Digitalising the NHS is the best way of delivering a modern healthcare system that will help to improve patient care and save lives.

“I’m delighted that 90% of NHS trusts now have electronic patient record systems up and running in hospitals, and we’re continuing to provide support to the remaining 10% to get this vital technology in place.

“Electronic records will ensure health and care staff have access to patient information when and where it’s needed, supporting them to deliver care efficiently, effectively and safely.”

Raihan Talukdar, Chief Clinical Information Officer at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We are embracing digital transformation in healthcare at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. The launch of the first phase of our electronic patient record in October marked a significant step forward for us.

“Our overall aim is to put our service users at the heart of everything we do. A comprehensive electronic patient record helps us to give compassionate and safe care to the people we care for and support.

“We believe our electronic patient record will help us to help our service users have better experiences in our care and streamline processes for our staff. It's early days, but the potential impact on patient care is truly exciting.”
