Prepare for upcoming changes to NHS Email Relay configurations

Planned configuration changes on the NHS Email Relay Service will start in early December, and are expected to complete by the end of 2024.

We advise organisations with a *.NHS.uk domain to:

  • review your business continuity plans in advance to avoid potential mail flow problems. These problems could arise if your organisation has previously hard coded IP addresses into applications instead of using host names
  • read the Relay Configuration knowledge base article on the NHSmail support site. This article has been updated with the latest information on the primary connection and configuration settings

If you have any issues, please contact helpdesk@nhs.net.

Final chance to share your views: the electronic patient record (EPR) usability survey for secondary care

Acute, mental health, community and ambulance trusts are invited to complete the national EPR usability survey, which is open to clinicians and clinical support colleagues who use EPRs, until 20 December 2024.

The survey results will help the NHS measure how effectively EPRs support people in their work. They will also enable NHS England to collate a national view of the factors impacting EPR usability to identify:

  • best practise by EPR and care setting to support improvement of user experience
  • targeted funding to address ongoing EPR optimisation

Issue discovered relating to positions managed by ESR

Care Identity Management release 6.5 has fixed an issue we recently discovered where some position assignments managed by Electronic Staff Record (ESR) were being deleted from Care Identity user profiles.

This issue was introduced with release 6.2 on 17 October 2024 and first identified on 24 October 2024.

The issue

Position assignments added in ESR were causing previous positions added in different organisations, also in ESR, to be removed.

Here is an example of the issue:

  1. User A1 uses ESR to add position assignment P1 within organisation Y1.
  2. User A2 uses Care Identity Management to add position assignment P2 within organisation Y1.
  3. User A3 uses ESR to add position assignment P3 within organisation Y2.
  4. This caused position assignment P1 to be deleted from organisation Y1.
  5. Position assignment P2 in organisation Y1 is not affected.

The impact

We are assessing the full impact of this issue and which users were affected by it. We'll be contacting anyone we find to have been affected by it in the coming days.

If you know that you have been affected we would ask you to raise a ticket through the NHS Digital Customer Portal or to email ssd.nationalservicedesk@nhs.net

We apologise for this issue and any inconvenience it has caused in your organisation.

Read step-by-step guidance on how to register:

We've recently introduced security codes via text message to the self-service smartcard unlock application. This was added in release 5.71 of Care Identity Management on 25 September 2024.

We've also updated the step-by-step guidance on how to use self-service smartcard unlock.
