All healthcare technology suppliers that use an NHS Public Key Infrastructure certificate to connect to the NHS Spine will need to update their certificates before they expire in 2024 to maintain secure access.
Communication via the Spine will cease for any IT systems with invalid certificates, which could impact patient care.
New certificates will be available from early June. Find out what you need to do or contact our team if you have any questions or need further support.
In January 2023 we sent a survey out to organisations involved in developing healthcare software to ask them for feedback on integrating with our APIs. This is the third time we’ve conducted the survey – the first time was January 2020 and the second was January 2021, so we now have a good view on how things have progressed over the last 3 years.
The good news is that we have improved – with the overall satisfaction score increasing from 2.3 to 3.8 out of 5 over that time. But we also know there is still more to do – especially around onboarding, which continues to be a key pain point for software developers.
Adults in England who reported bad or very bad health are more than three times as likely to report feeling lonely than those with good or very good health.
Published by NHS England today, the Health Survey for England, 2021 part 21 reports on the nation’s health and surveyed 5,880 adults about a variety of topics including their health, physical activity and gambling.
Three in five adults (62%) reporting bad or very bad health said they felt lonely2 at least some of the time compared to one in five (18%) with good or very good health.
The report also found that more than three quarters of adults (77%) reported good or very good general health.
Seven in ten men (70%) and six in ten women (59%) met the 2011 aerobic guidelines for weekly physical activity3.
One in ten adults (10%) reported having participated in online gambling (excluding the National Lottery and other lotteries) during the last 12 months4.
For most of 2021, interviews were carried out by telephone, rather than in person because of COVID-19 pandemic precautions. As a result of these changes in data collection, findings from 2021 are not directly comparable with those from previous years.
Loneliness:
In 2021, 18% of those who reported good or very good health reported that they felt lonely at least some of the time.
This proportion increased to 35% of those with fair health and to 62% of those with bad or very bad health.
More than one in five people in England (22%) reported feeling lonely at least some of the time.
27% of adults reported that they never felt lonely whereas 6% reported that they often or always felt lonely (chronic loneliness).
Adult health:
77% of adults reported good or very good general health. 6% reported bad or very bad health.
40% of adults had at least one longstanding illness or condition5. This included a higher proportion of women (43%) than men (37%).
Gambling:
50% of adults reported having participated in some form of gambling activity (including the National Lottery and other lotteries) in the last 12 months. Among those who had gambled, their Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI)6 scores identified 5.8% as engaging in at-risk or problem gambling
10% of adults reported having participated in online gambling (excluding the National Lottery and other lotteries) during the last 12 months. For these adults, their PGSI scores identified 18.2% as engaging in at-risk or problem gambling.
People who had gambled and spent money on four or more different gambling activities in the last 12 months were more likely to engage in at-risk or problem gambling (27.8%) than those who gambled on two or three different activities (4.6%) or only one activity (1.6%).
Physical activity:
A higher proportion of men (70%) than women (59%) aged 16 and over met the 2011 aerobic guidelines of at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or equivalent per week.
Levels of aerobic activity varied by areas, with those living in more deprived areas7 being less likely to have met the guidelines. The proportion of adults meeting the 2011 aerobic guidelines was lowest (53%) in the most deprived area quintile and highest in the least deprived area quintile (68%) and in the second least deprived quintile (70%).
The Health Survey for England is commissioned by NHS England and carried out by the National Centre for Social Research in conjunction with UCL, which co-authors the report.

GP practices are being encouraged to join a new national online service making registering patients quicker and easier.
More than 900 GP practices – around one in seven nationally (14%) - have already enrolled for the digital Register with a GP surgery service, which is managed by NHS England. Over 240,000 online patient registrations have been completed since its launch.
The service, which enables patients or carers to go online to find and register with a local GP practice, is now available in the NHS App - simplifying the process.
GP practices process around 6 million registrations a year, with many still using paper forms, so patients often have to visit surgeries to collect paperwork.
The new online service has been shown to save GP practice staff up to 15 minutes per registration by helping to reduce paperwork and admin time. The service, available to all practices, has been rigorously tested with users and a wide variety of patient groups, including charities who support homeless people and asylum seekers.
Patients can access the service using individual practice websites and the NHS website's Find a GP service, which is also available through the NHS App. Registration is quick and easy for patients, with the service automatically checking they live in the catchment area for their new practice.
The patient’s information is then automatically emailed to GP practices in a structured format aligned to their IT systems, helping reduce the time it takes staff to process registrations. The service is fully integrated with NHS login, which enables people to use one login to access several health and care services, verifying their identity. It also matches patients to their NHS numbers, with a 90% first time match rate, further cutting admin for practices.
The service is fully compatible with translator services, ensuring accessibility for patients and a new look paper form is still available for anyone that needs it.
Stephen Koch, NHS England’s Executive Director of Platforms, said: “This service reduces the administrative burden for general practice as well as making GP registration even more accessible to the public, offering patients more choice, convenience and consistency.
“We’re pleased to see a growing number of GP practices are coming on board, helping them save time and money. By recently integrating the service with the NHS App, we hope even more GP practices will take advantage of this new digital tool.”
Dr Shanker Vijay, Digital First Clinical Lead for London and a practising GP, is already using the service and also assists other practices to introduce it. He said: “We live in a ‘one-click’ culture and we recognise that many busy people want online solutions.
“Vulnerable patients and those with physical access needs don’t need to visit the GP surgery to register, and people can access the service at any time, including outside of working hours to fit around their other responsibilities.”
There are also plans to make the service compatible with a number of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions, which use bots to enable registration information to be automatically added into GP clinical systems at the touch of a button, as an optional extra. Full clinical system integration is also planned for next year.
More information on Register with a GP surgery is available here https://digital.nhs.uk/services/register-with-a-gp-surgery-service. Practices interested in offering the service can self-enrol or contact the dedicated support team, or attend the upcoming webinar on June 14, 2023 by registering here.

We are extending the timescale for implementing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for NHSmail users in response to feedback that some organisations need longer to prepare for these changes.
Instead of working toward a 30 June 2023 deadline, we will support you to make these changes as soon as possible over the next 11 months.
Multi-factor authentication is crucial to strengthening our collective cyber security, so please implement your current plans as quickly as possible. We have published an MFA Policy to outline our approach and below is an overview of this:
- From 3 July 2023, multi-factor authentication will be enabled by default when new NHSmail user accounts are created. Local administrators will have the ability to disable this if necessary.
- You will be able to add trusted sites to your organisation where staff will be protected by MFA but not prompted when logging in to their account from a trusted site, creating a better user experience. We will share more details when we have finalised our approach to this.
- All accounts signing in from outside of the UK will require MFA enabling before travelling.
- We are enhancing our reporting to give you a better view of multi-factor authentication activity in your organisation.
- Our guidance and MFA Adoption Toolkit will help support your changeover.
- Pharmacy, optometry, dentistry and social care (PODS) and application accounts are not in scope until later this year.
We expect most organisations to have fully implemented multi-factor authentication by end of March 2024.
If you have any questions, you can email feedback@nhs.net.
